IT managers are always looking for ways to do their jobs more efficiently, while still providing the quality of service that their clients expect. Virtual LAN technology (VLAN) can help them on both fronts, by easing administrative chores and improving enterprise network performance. VLANs allow IT managers to group users and resources in any way they like, regardless of the physical LAN segment to which those resources are attached. An organization may want to group all users in the marketing department on the same
VLAN with the servers that host the applications and data they use most often, for example. The users who belong to that marketing group may be spread throughout a building, or even the country, but they can still belong to the same VLAN.
This type of flexibility in grouping users and resources stands in stark contrast to the days when IT managers were restricted to grouping resources solely by the port to which they were connected. Any changes to the network configuration required a visit to one or more wiring closets to physically move the user or resource from one port to another.With VLANs, such changes can be performed in software, from a central administrative console, thus greatly improving efficiency. At the same time, VLANs can be used to improve network
performance in a number of ways – by grouping users that communicate often with one another on the same VLAN, for example, or by creating a VLAN for use by “power users” that tend to consume a lot of network bandwidth.
VLANs are most suitable for mid- to large size companies, but even smaller companies with highly demanding users may benefit. Essentially, any organization with a network large enough that it needs to be segmented in some fashion can benefit.



When they first came on the scene in the mid 1990s, there were three basic ways to build a VLAN on any given switch or router. The port-based model called for assigning each router or switch port to a specific VLAN. Ports 1-5, for example, might be the engineering VLAN, while ports 6-10 belong to the marketing
VLAN. Some ports may be assigned to more than one VLAN, such as a port that connects a server used by multiple groups. Administrators could make changes to port and VLAN assignments from a central console, rather than physically pulling and rearranging wires. If a repeater was attached to any port, however, all the devices connected to that repeater must belong to the same VLAN. Another approach was to assign resources to VLANs based on their unique media access control (MAC) address. The switch or router supporting the VLAN maintained a list detailing which MAC addresses belong to which VLAN, and routed
traffic accordingly based on the source or destination MAC address. The drawbacks to this method included the time required to assign each MAC address to a given VLAN. Assigning the same MAC address to multiple VLANs could also wreak havoc with bridges and routers, making it difficult to share server resources among separate VLANs. Layer 3-based VLANs group resources according to the protocol and Layer 3 address they employ. In this fashion, all IP or IPX traffic can be assigned to its own VLAN, or perhaps all wireless LAN and Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic. The Layer 3 approach also enables all non-routable protocols to share a VLAN, thus limiting the effect of broadcasts on the rest of the network, improving performance for all users.

Apple’s iPad vs its Competitors

It’s been almost a year since Apple released the iPad and we’re less than a week away from the unveiling of the iPad 2, and still there’s no competition.

There are a few very good reasons for Apple’s success and why its competitors are finding it difficult to gain any traction against the king of digital devices. There’s the infrastructure, the combination of hardware and software, and the fact that its competitors are content to settle for second best.

Let’s look at these separately.

Apple didn’t invent the tablet, but it did popularize the concept and how it fits into our lifestyle. Clearly the evidence of this is that every tablet announced or released since the iPad looks just like it.

The fact that every company making a tablet is trying to compete with what Apple offers means that they aren’t looking to make something better than the iPad. They are just trying to catch up. Apple has done everything it can to make sure they are No. 1 in the tablet market, but the competition is ensuring they will stay there.

There’s a saying in hockey: Don’t go to where the puck is, go to where the puck is going to be. Nobody is willing to make a bet on where the market is going to be, so they go to where the market is and, right now, Apple controls the puck.

Until someone decides to step outside of Apple’s shadow, they will never be better than No. 2. That’s where the fight is right now.

Since the tablets are all very similar, how do companies set themselves apart? It’s not the operating system. No matter how good Google makes Honeycomb, the fact is, almost every company out there will be using it.

HP has an interesting offering with WebOS. From everyone I’ve spoken with, WebOS has the biggest potential to be a hit among consumers. However, HP wasn’t exactly forthcoming with detailed information during its TouchPad event, so it’s hard to know where the product will land once pricing information is available.

Motorola has the Xoom, but so far the reviews haven’t been the best. Honestly, I’m not sure consumers will flock to Motorola anymore, certainly not like they did in the days of the RAZR.

Even if Apple’s competitors were able to get past the hardware and operating system issues, there is still one component that can’t be overcome—the infrastructure.

On the other hand, Apple controls the operating system and hardware. If Apple makes advances in iOS, they are Apple’s to share with their customers and nobody else.

There are two companies that stand out in the tablet market that make their own hardware and operating systems: HP and RIM. The problem is that they haven’t done anything.

RIM announced its PlayBook last September; they announced the PlayBook 4G in January; and they announced the PlayBook 4G LTE, HSPA+ and Mobile WiMAX models in February. So far, not one has hit the market. I think RIM needs to settle down and ship something.

Apple didn’t create the iPad in a year or two. They have been working on it for almost a decade. Around the same time they started working on the iPad, they released iTunes, which created a music and video foundation that continues to dominate today.

With iTunes and the ability for users to purchase music, movies, TV shows, and educational content, Apple is giving its users a one-stop shop. Buy, download, sync, and take everything with you.

If you add the App Store to that equation, Apple has the bases covered. There doesn’t seem to be a piece of the puzzle that’s missing.

Over the next six months, iPad competitors will be coming, and there will be a lot of them. Unfortunately for them, as they release some worthy competitors to the iPad 1, Apple will be releasing the iPad 2 and then moving on to the iPad 3.

Apple’s R&D is already years ahead. It’s hard to imagine that they will be brought down anytime soon.

New Dell phones and Tablets in 2011: Release and Specs

It seems like we have a bit of de ja vu on our hands here, as you may remember us telling you about another Dell leak last year which revealed handsets in a similar fashion. A new roadmap leak has revealed upcoming smartphones and tablets that the company are planning to release.

As reported from Engadget, roadmap images have been acquired by Android Central and WPCentral and it shows a healthy collection of handsets which the computer giant are planning to bring to market throughout the rest of the year. It looks like Dell has something to show off at Mobile World Congress after all!

On the smartphone side of things, handsets revealed include the Dell Wrigley – a ‘next gen’ Windows Phone 7 handset with specs thought to be a 4-inch display screen, 1Ghz processor, 8 megapixel camera and 720p video recording. Next up is the Dell Hancock, which is looking to be one of the first handsets out to run on Android Ice Cream – Google’s successor to Honeycomb. Features include a dual-core processor and dual cameras.

Finally, we have the Dell Millenium which is meant to be hitting during the fourth quarter of 2011. Specs include Android Ice Cream, a large 4.3-inch display screen and dual-core processors.

Ready for more? The roadmaps also revealed Dell’s 2011 plans as far as tablets are concerned, and it looks like first up will be an April release for the Dell Gallo – a tablet which will be packing Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Other tablets have been mentioned for CES 2012, and titles include the Dell Opus One, Silver Oak, and the Dell Peju which is apparently a Windows 8 tablet – exciting stuff.

Unlike the past reviews, this time I have decided to focus on something that is becoming the trend very fast. Being a student I have seen many other students leaving the big bulky laptops and going for minis or net book.

So this week, we will try to find out if it’s a system for you or not.

Looks Stylish:

This little machine obviously looks stylish. Its compact and small design is definitely worth a second look. Its design is based on the larger inspiron laptops.

The ports and connectors are also placed neatly on the sides. There are no touch buttons on the keyboard like the usual laptops but still has accounted for that functionality in its keyboard keys.

No Multi Tasking:

In these mini machines, multi tasking can be done but not without difficulty. You can use programs like explorer, MS office and media player at one time but not anything heavier.

Basically it can perform multi tasking for programs related to lighter office work only. You cannot even have two parallel installations sometimes. You can not open programs like Adobe Photoshop or any such heavier 2 or 3 programs at a time. It would not generate an error or anything but its performance would be very slow.

Light as the Wind:

The laptop is pretty impressive in terms of weight even with a six cell battery. It weighs hardly a KG. The smaller screen size also makes it easier to work for a longer time because it does not cause stress for your eyes.

Carrying it around is almost as easy as carrying a cell phone with you. It would fit in a briefcase or a small carrying case with utmost ease.

Overheating?

Although I have used many systems myself, but I must say this is one of the best in terms of generating heat – because it does not get even a little hot after working continuously for 3,4 hours.

I have seen people using it even in blankets or bed sheets and never complaining about the heat. (But this definitely does not mean that you should try this too)

Windows 7 Starter:

Most of you will have no experience using windows seven starter editions because usually Win 7 Basic or Win 7 Ultimate is used.

Starter edition has some features missing as compared to other more expensive editions. I am not sure about how much starter costs or if it’s even available but Win 7 Basic costs Rs. 7,500 and Win 7 Premium costs around Rs. 9,000.

Some of the missing features are as weird as not having the ability to change your wallpaper. This thing, not being a problem, can be irritating for many users.

Pre-Installed Software:

There are some preinstalled software like Win 7 Starter, McAfee Anti virus and the basic programs that come preinstalled. In terms of software, this machine is not much to talk about.

Good Speakers:

The speakers are somewhat small but are good in terms of quality. Sound is usually not an issue and there is a headphone jack too in case you like to use head phones.

Underline:

It is a good system for office, home and business applications but only if you don’t have to run very heavy programs.
