Zenbook UX31 Asus New Creation

This slim, clever and quick laptop is great news for those who need Windows

13.3 inch screen | 2.3 mm front edge | 4 GB RAM | 4+ hours battery time

Only 2.8 mm thin at the front edge and about 17 mm at the thickest point, the Zenbook is as slim and stylish as it gets. The spun metal and hairline aluminium body give it an industrial yet appealing look. And it can get cracking from sleep mode in just 2 seconds. If that is not impressive for a Windows machine, its standby time of two weeks certainly is.

This good-looking, fast machine is smart too. It automatically saves all data and open files when its battery reaches 5 per cent charge. You don’t have to bother with shutting down before rushing off for a meeting.

While you can choose between an i5 or i7 Core processor, there is no option to the 13.3 inch (33.8 cm) screen. (In case you want an 11.1 inch display, you can go for Asus’ UX21 model.) The LED backlit display supports 1,600 x 900 p resolution. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 give you basic graphic processing, but you can’t push it to the edge.

For storage you can choose between a 128 GB or 256 GB hard disc, and there is 4 GB of Ram. It comes preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Premium. And while it looks thin, the machine is slightly heavy at 1.3 kg.

For connectivity, it has: USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Micro HDMI port, and a mini-VGA port. There is no Ethernet, just a Wi-Fi. What is really nice is that this machine is Bluetooth 4.0 ready.

The other smashing features are in its speakers. Asus teamed up with B&O, and incorporated in them its Sonic Master technology. The sound is enhanced because of digital sound processing and the speakers’ oversized resonance chambers.

The Zenbook delivers a good 4+ hours of battery time on power save mode. In this mode, however, the machine tends to be a bit slow—especially while browsing the internet or working on large Excelsheets. It works fine in performance mode, but you will need to keep its power adapter nearby.

This machine works very well for people who want a thin and light machine that does what it promises, runs Windows, and boasts of a good battery backup.

How to Extend Life of Laptop

People seem to be on the go more than ever before. And they’d never dream of leaving their electronic life behind.
Ah, the lure of laptop computers. A fully-featured computer that weighs a few pounds and can be carried in your briefcase on a business trip or under your arm as you migrate from the home office to your family room. What’s more, along with ever-expanding wireless Internet availability, laptops allow you to surf at the beach without getting in the water or send email from your porch on a nice day.
This might be why the first quarter of last year saw the best sales record for mobile PCs in eight years, according to a blog at CNET.com. This coincided with the onset of intense iPad hype. However, as one analyst pointed out, limitations of that product category in the face of aggressive price cuts of regular notebooks seemed to give the larger notebook computers staying power in the market. They do more than their smaller counterparts, but consumers still seem generally willing to sacrifice the performance of a desktop for portability, making the traditional laptop the proverbial happy medium for most people.
When it comes to laptops, good things might come in small packages. But portability comes at a price.

A Small Space
For all their benefits, laptop computers can certainly fall short when it comes to memory, speed and hard drive space. And special considerations should be given to wireless network security and battery life. Fortunately, there are some great tips and tricks, special services and accessories that can help make laptop users’ lives a lot easier.
Whenever you open a file or an application, data is stored via Random Access Memory. Laptops use a smaller, slower version of RAM than their desktop counterparts. Once that memory is used up, the computer reverts to the hard drive, causing it to operate much more slowly.  What this essentially means is that the more RAM you have, the more applications and files can be open simultaneously without affecting performance. Therefore, it can be helpful for laptop users to use as few applications at a time as possible.
How much hard drive space you need depends on how you use your computer. If you find your music, photo and video collections are causing your hard drive to burst at the seams and thus reducing operating speed, additional options for data storage might help. External hard drives and online storage services can go a long way in freeing up space and providing backup protection for your data in the event of a computer crash.

Wireless Worries
While you may have the ability to work on spreadsheets on the sun porch, the portable life isn’t entirely peaceful. Laptop users would do well to pay special attention to issues that affect wireless network security.
Unlike computers that connect via router or Ethernet cable, wireless networks talk to devices using radio waves. According to an article at LaptopLogic.com, these open radio waves leave you susceptible to myriad snooping attacks that could make way for a hacker to access your network and all of your valuable information. This means family pictures, passwords, electronic bank statements, the information contained in your emails and your personal files are all compromised.

LaptopLogic.com suggests some preventive measures to help achieve security while using a wireless connection with a laptop. For example, when you create a wireless password make sure that you use a combination of numbers, letters (upper and lower case), and symbols. You also need to make sure that password is long -- the longer the password is, the more time required to crack it. It is also recommended that you use guest wireless networks rather than readily giving out your passwords to friends visiting your home. A guest network is a common feature found in newer routers, that is essentially a second network which is completely isolated from the network your personal devices use.

HP Pavilion

Manufacturers: Hewlett-Packard
Class: Pavilion
Model: dm3t
clip image001 thumb1 HP Pavilion [Laptop Preview]
Specs Overview:
  • Operating System: Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i3-380UM 1.33Ghz
  • RAM: 3 GB DDR3
  • Hard Drive: 320 GB @ 7200 RPM
  • Graphics Card: Intel Integrated HD card
  • Battery: 6 cell Lithium-Ion, 7.5 hours max
  • Display: 13.3” LED Display
  • DVD-ROM: None
  • Webcam: HP TrueVision Webcam with MIC
  • Wireless: Wireless Network Card 802.11b/g/n
  • Bluetooth: None
Thin n Light:
The system offers a very compact design in terms of thickness. Compared to most laptops, this one comes in a sleek design. A width of just 1” is very impressive.
This feature along with a screen size of 13.3” contributes to the decrease in weight of the system. It weights nearly 3.98” lbs, which is pretty impressive particularly for an HP system since they are usually known to be bulky.
clip image002 thumb3 HP Pavilion [Laptop Preview]
Audio Software Flaws:
The audio software of the this HP laptop is very irritating. Any program that requires full screen operation has to be minimized to change volume levels.
Although the volume controls are integrated on the top of the keyboard, but touching them minimizes the (full-screened) program and then the change takes place.
This is especially very irritating when a heavy program or a game is running and it gets minimized each time the volume controls are touched.
For some this is a problem, for others, this isn’t even a flaw.
Screen Movement:
The screen of the laptop can not be tilted beyond a certain angle. After movement of about 30 degrees or so, the screen can not tilt backwards any further. This is annoying some times if you have to sit on a level higher than the placing position of the system.
Although the LED screen would still let you see the screen properly but it will loose the brightness and definition to some extent.
Not the gamers’ choice:
Unfortunately HP does not offer any choice to upgrade the graphics card of this HP Pavilion laptop. No other card can be used in with the laptop except the one already mentioned in the specs.
This certainly comes as a disappointment because most companies would let the users customize the laptop if they agree to pay more but in this case even that option is not available.
So if you are a fan of gaming, this is certainly not your system.
Good battery Timing:
The battery time of this system is particularly impressive. With light browsing and using the machine in power saver mode, it is possible to get a battery time of about 5.5 hours.
With more usage the time will get reduced to about 2 hours. The time that the company claims can usually be achieved when you switch on the laptop and do nothing, and this is generally not the case.

Nice Design:
Compared to some of its other competitors, HP is still doing a good job as far as the design of a system is concerned. The laptop body is made of metal, not plastic and its interior gives a rich metallic look. The metal used this time is of better quality as it does not get finger prints over it self and is also more gripping than the ones used in previous pavilions.
